I have done a survey with some of my friends who have made a feature film to ask them how they strategized.....and all of them have said that it has been done by word of mouth....this person likes your film and tells someone else who is the selector for a particular film festival and suddenly...you are in. Or the funding bodies who have funded your film have told someone who is the selector for said festival and you are in.....
Jon Riess (Think outside the box office) says if you are a low budget filmmaker you have to diy. In fact, if you have a big film usually you have to diy.
And you have to find your niche group and market it to them.
So...what would Johnny Ghost's niche market group be I wonder.....think music goes on....
Ghosts. People who love ghost films.....one end of the horror market, though not strictly horror...
Music. People who love music - post punk music, experimental music, ensemble orchestras...(sub group is Melbourne independent music.....we have the score by Dave Graney and Clare Moore, we feature a vintage Birthday Party clip, and we have Si Francis (member of Wagons) in the cast.
Filmbuffs. People who like discovering small, independent films.
